Bulldozer at runway end
High mounds of earth are broken up by this powerful bulldozer, thus eliminating a hazard at the end of the runway. The ground at either end of the runway must be level for at least 1,000 feet beyond the limits of the runway itself, so that planes which overshoot the landing area will not capsize. The earth is loose-packed in these areas to slow down the planes. - FRANCE Date 8-19-44 AC/AS, Intelligence En., A.A.F.
