Bombers shot down over Yap Island

A United States submarine rescued flyers of two 13th Air Force bombers of the 394th Bomb Squadron, 5th Bomb Group, who were shot down by Jap "Zekes" on a mission over Yap Island in the Caroline Group. The flyers were transferred to a crash boat which took them into Seeadler Harbor, Los Negros, Admiralty Islands. Here, S/Sgt. Bert T. Hawes of Babblerton, Ohio is being carried ashore. July 1944.
