Bell at Ishikawa Exhibit Okinawa

A BELL FOR OKINAWA, Ryukyu Retto - Famous in Okinawa's history which connects the past with the present is this huge bell which hangs in the courtyard at the Ishikawa Exhibit on the north central part of the island. Believed to have been cast by the Japanese, the bell was placed in the Enkakuju Temple at the foot of Shuri Castle in 1945 where it was used twice daily to give a report of the times and remained until the spring of 1945. In style the bell is heavily studded, embossed and engraved. The bell is a favorite with Okinawan children in the Ishikawa Village, who keep the area around it clean at all times.
