Balikpapan bombing
Balikpapan, from which the Japs formerly drew 15,000,000 barrels of oil and high octane. gas yearly, takes another intensive blasting as a string of general explosive bombs head for the beach landing area. The 13th AAF's "Jungle Air Force" put Balikpapan under land-based attack in September 1944, and has pounded the major refinery district regularly since. Consolidated B-24s, North American B-25s and Lockheed P-38s of the 13th AF carried out a month of intensive raids before Australian troops invaded Balikpapan.
