B-29 Superfortress Futema airstrip
1945-06-15
Lorrain shovels are busy removing the loosened coral that was blasted free by TNT from the coral hill located at the south end of the B-29 "Superfortress" Futema Airstrip on the west coast of Okinawa, Ryukyu Retto. Trucks of the 806th EAB that were constructing the runway are dumping the coral sand on the strip, building up the base to the required thickness to handle the super bombers landing force. At the right of the strip the taxiway and hardstands for parking of the bombers progressed satisfactorily under the construction of the 854th EAB. Work was begun on 15 June 1945 for this 7500 foot long strip and was finished about the 1st of September. 16 July 1945.
