500th Bombardment Group planes suffered very little damage due to operational maintenance failures. Not always, however, could the big ships be berthed or taken off without accident. The landing gear on "GRAVEL GERTIE", B-29 Superfortress collapsed 6 August 1945. 73rd Galaxy, 21st Bomber Command, 20th Air Force. Saipan, Marianas Islands.
