B-29 bases in China

BUILDING B-29 BASES IN CHINA by USAAF aviation engineers and native laborers. Landing strips were constructed on rice fields and paddies, bought from Chinese farmers. Then the farmers themselves and neighboring townspeople pitched in to do the work. Each village contributed its quota of so many men, mules, wheelbarrows, carts, implements. The laborers came from as far as 150 miles away -- on foot. Engineers wo started to use this old German steamroller found that it retarded rather then aided work on this new base. The coolies, open-mouthed, would stop their own labors to follow the machine.
