B-26 Marauders over Salerno

In the softening-up process which preceded the 5th Army's invasion at Salerno, Martin B-26 Marauders of the 12th Air Force participated in this mission against the Italian port. Escorted by Mustang fighters, the bombers showered their lethal load on railroad tracks, buildings, and shore installations. Intercepted by enemy aircraft, most of which were ME-109's, the Marauders and Mustangs shot down 28 and damaged three others.
