B-26 Marauders near Rome

1944-01-22

As landing forces were establishing beachheads at Nettuno, Italy, on January 22, 1944 B-26 Marauder medium bombers of the U.S. Army 12th Air Force gave support to the operations just 30 miles below Rome by bombing vital communications targets immediately to the rear of the fifth Army Front. As pictured here the planes are bombing the highway bridges at Ceprano, Italy. The black puffs at upper left are bursts of Nazi flak. Note the snow-capped mountains of "Sunny Italy" in the distance.
