B-26 Marauder bombs FW-190

BOMBS ALMOST HIT FIGHTER -- A surprise objective in the form of an FW-190 German single engine fighter looms beneath bombs dropped by a 9th Bombardment Division B-26 Marauder. It was a near miss for the bombs. This remarkable photograph, taken by a vertically mounted aerial camera, shows the FW-190 above a thick cloud layer and about 475 feet below the B-26 in which the camera was mounted. The camera plane was one of a formation of Marauders jumped by eight FW 190s and ME-109s while carrying out an attack on western Germany railroad yards. Bomber crewmen claimed one fighter destroyed and one probably destroyed. None of the bombers was lost.
