B-25 over Northern Italy

A North American B-25, while on a mission over Northern Italy on 26 May 44, had one of its vertical stabilizers shot off by flak. The pilot brought his plane back to Corsica, intending to try and land it at his home base. However, rather than risk a landing, he ordered his crew to bail out over Ghisonaccia airbase. All crew members landed safely. The pilot then bailed out, but suffered a broken leg in landing. The plane went into a spin and crashed at the intersection of two main roads in the town of Ghisonaccia.
