B-25 HAWKEYE over northern Sardinia

Algiers, Algeria - The North American B-25 "HAWKEYE", piloted by 1st Lt. John G. Stewart, Winnsboro, S.C., in a mission over northern Sardinia, was badly shot up in the right rudder, wing, fuselage and especially in the engine nacelle, by a ME 109. S/Sgt. Raymond A. Morris of Ashland, Wis., gunner, in return shot and destroyed the ME 109, and Lt. Stewart brought the ship home and landed safely. Shown are: 1st Lt. Leland Moore, Terril, Iowa, regular pilot of the ship, and his bombardier, 2nd Lt. Raymond Petrich, Lakewood, Ohio, looking over the damage while repair crew works on plane.
