B-24 Liberators over Kurile Islands

Japanese installations in the Kurile Islands are kept under day and night sur-veillance by the Consolidated B-24 Liberators of the Eleventh Air Force. This unusual mosaic made up of two photographs, contrasts not only the day and night photographic technique, but also shows the changes of season in the Kuriles. The lower half of the photograph was taken last spring of the Tagan Point air-field on Matsuwa Island. The upper half of the picture was taken several months later. The top half of the picture was taken in the daytime while the lower half is a night photograph made with photoflash bombs dropped from the plane and set to detonate a calculated distance above the ground.
