B-24 Liberators over Iwo Jima

On 27 January 1945, Consolidated B-24 "Liberators" of the 392nd Bomb Squadron, 30th Bomb Group, took off from Saipan for a raid on Iwo Jima. Flak encountered by the planes was intense and accurate! One 75 mm shell hit this B-24 and exploded injuring the pilot, the co-pilot and navigator. Miraculously, the plane returned to its Marianas base.
