B-24 Liberators attack Porto Marghera

The oil storage depot at Porto Marghera, near Venice was attacked by Consolidated B-24 Liberators of the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces on 25 May 1944. The attack was part of the big "Operation Strangle" hitting the enemy relentlessly from the front and the rear without let-up. Direct bomb strikes exploded storage tanks and lifted clouds of smoke 12,000 ft. into the air. To the left of the oil depot, across the canal, other direct hits were scored on the industrial area of Porto Marghera, Italy.
