B-24 Liberator over Porto Santo Stefano

1944-05-12

Hit by flak after completing its bomb run over Porto Santo Stefano, Italy, on 12 May 1944, this Consolidated B-24 "Liberator" of the 15th Air Force, flew with its formation for seven minutes after losing part of its tail, then split "S" a number of times, each time the pilot recovered by use of Aileron. After all crew members bailed out safely, the ship went out of control and crashed into the sea. Here the "Liberator" maneuvers to maintain its position.
