B-24 Liberator crash at 8th AAF base

Pieces of what used to be a Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber lie sprawled over this Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress base of the 8th AAF. The Liberator crashed on its way to its own airfield, just a few feet away from ambulances that were awaiting the return of this base's Fortresses from a bombing attack on a German war plant. Flak hits on the Consolidated B-24 had disabled its gasoline gauges and its motors conked out just as it came over this airdrome. Six crewmen who were wounded were immediately given emergency treatment by waiting "medics" - even before the four uninjured fliers were able to pick themselves out of the wreckage and walk away from the remains of their plane.
