B-17 raid on Stuttgart

etc. on B-17 raid on Stuttgart, Germany 6 Sept. 1943. Mission lasted 7 hours of which 5 hours were under oxygen. Photographer S/Sgt. Dave Barker was in nose of plane in middle element--26,000 ft. altitude over target. Pilot 1/Lt. Jack Kney, who is known for fact that he always smokes cigars-thru his oxygen mask during raids, brought the ship down in a miraculous landing, after running out of gas in a small field in S. England. Plane hardly damaged, no one injured. Photographer had noted one prop feathered while en route back to home field-went up front to check. Pilot flipped gas gauges on--No. 1, empty; Nos. 2,3 & 4 empty." Pilot, queried by photographer, "What are you flying on?" answered, "On a*****/%? good reputation. Other engines cut out one by one & pilot & crew quite unpretturbed-nobody wanted to bail out--ship landed Okay. B-17's encountered plenty of flak & strong enemy fighter opposition on this raid.
