B-17 Lucille Ball at Petersborough

2nd Lt. Donald A. Gaylord of Waterloo, Iowa, pilot of the Boeing B-17 "LUCILLE BALL", looks over the damage to his plane which resulted from the controls being shot away while returning to his base at Petersborough, England from a mission over enemy territory. The wounded plane started crash-diving over the town of Ipswich, England and Lt. Gaylord stuck to the controls and guided it away from the city, bringing it in to a belly landing in a field. 16 November 1943.
