B-17 Flying Fortresses over Ploesti

Smoke from the oil refineries at Ploesti, Rumania, rises high as Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 15th AAF come off the target during the heavy bomber attack of 9 July 1944. Though 60 German fighters ventured to attack the bomber formations, many large fires were set and explosions observed in the target area. The 15th AAF Bombers and their fighter escort shot down 14 of the attacking enemy aircraft.
