B-17 Flying Fortresses over Europe
1945-01-31
Perfect formation is one of the secrets of accurate bombing patterns, tremendously difficult to achieve in the turbulent winter weather over Europe now. These Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 15th AF accomplished this perfect formation in their attack on the Moosbierbaum oil refineries on 31 January 1945. The refineries are 22 miles northwest of Vienna. Lt. Gen. Ira C. Eaker, commander in chief of the M.A.A.F. has revealed that constant air attacks against German oil sources has limited the German offensive on the western front.
