B-17 Flying Fortresses over Berlin

Bursts of deadly flak explode around a formation of B-17 "Flying Fortresses" of the 452nd Bomb Group during their mission over Berlin, Germany, 9 March 1944. The flak appears as innocent puffs of smoke in this photo but each burst showers approximately 1400 jagged pieces of metal at any plane near it.
