B-17 Flying Fortresses near Belgrade

On September 3, 1944 Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 15th Air Force attacked the Pancevo railroad bridge near Belgrade, Yugoslavia. These three pictures tell the story. (upper left) the bridge before the Forts smashed home. (upper right)Bursting bombs cover the span. (lower left) The bridge over the Sava River after attacking Forts finished their job. Direct hits were scored smashing on span that left a gap in the bridge of 500 feet. Smoke from burning rolling stock can be seen at a point between the 3d and 4th spans.
