B-17 Flying Fortress over Vienna

ITALY - This Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress of the 15th Air Force staggered some 600 miles back to its home base after absorbing a direct flak hit over Vienna, Austria, October 7, 1944, which blew out walls of the radio waist compartments. Trapped in the lower ball by the explosion, the turret gunner would have perished had the plane crashed. 483rd Bomb Group.
