B-17 Flying Fortress over Tunis

1943-02-01

Tunis, Tunisia - This Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress", piloted by 1st Lt. Kenneth R. Bragg of Savannah, Georgia, was on a bombing mission over Tunis on 1 February 1943 when a ME 109 dove at the ship. The Fortress fired on the attacking plane and apparently killed the pilot. The enemy ship plowed into the Fortress, its wing almost cutting the fuselage in half. The ME 109 spun to the ground and crashed. Lt. Bragg nursed the ship home and brought it in for a perfect landing with one elevator missing. This picture, made on the ground after the Fortress had landed, shows the extent of the damage.
