B-17 Flying Fortress over Steyr Austria

A blast from the guns of a German fighter over Steyr, Austria, tore this hole in the tail of a Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" of the 97th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force. Tail gunner S/Sgt. F. W. Fayette of Manchester, New Hampshire, stuck to his guns and shot down two Me 210's. The 19 year old marksman and other members of the crew are pictured by the battered plane. Italy.
