B-17 Flying Fortress over Italy

ITALY - "Patches" a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress of the 15th AAF, lives up to its name in this crazy-quilt appearance as it wings its way to another Axis target. Originally a camouflage-painted plane, with a habit of attracting flak, "Patches" now sports a wing section, rudder, waist door and numerous hole patches of shiny silver, salvaged from other planes. The plane is typical of the topnotch, ingenious maintenance of American aircraft overseas.
