END OF A FORTRESS - A B-17 Flying Fortress of the U.S. Army 8th Air Force goes down over Germany with fuel tank blazing, during an attack on oil targets at Merseburg. Other targets for the day included synthetic oil plants at Lutzkendorf, Bohlen and Zeitz, and a marshalling yard in the Saarbrucken area.
