B-17 Flying Fortress over Bologna
1943-09-02
PINEAPPLES OVER BOLOGNA---A cluster of bombs can be seen hurtling down towards the Bologna railroad yards in the long-range U.S.A.A.F. B-17 Flying Fortress raid on the northern Italian city on September 2, 1943. The puffs of bomb bursts from ex-plosives already dropped can be made out beneath the earth-bound bombs. Also hitting Bolzano and Trente, the Forts made a 1,500-mile trip round trip, their longest journey so far from North Africa into the European mainland. (NORTHWEST AFRICAN AIR FORCES. 97th Bomb Group, 341st Bomb Squadron.
