Awase Airstrip Construction

Awase Airstrip receiving its finishing touches from rollers and scrapers of the 36th Navy Con-struction Battalion, while the hardstands and taxiways are being made ready to handle the Navy land and carrier based planes by the 20th Navy Construction Battalion on 31 July 1945. Site of this Navy strip is on the east coast of Okinawa, midway down the island, and construction was started on 1 May 1945. The strip has a coral base and surface, is 5000 feet long with over 30,000 feet of taxiway to handle the 500 Marine planes which were expected there by November 1, 1945.
