Aviation engineers of the 9th Engineer Command can be seen here mobilizing some of their equipment on the other side of the Channel for work on one of the first emergency landing fields they laid down on the continent. The job of this specialized command is rapid-fire, combat construction of advance 9th Air Force airdromes. Traveling cranes like the one in the foreground are part of the armada of mobile machinery with which the aviation engineers are equipped. They also are armed and trained to fight.
