Australian landing craft at Balikpapan

Australian landing craft reach the beach at Balikpapan to launch the invasion of Borneo's greatest oil refining district. Beach installations and anti-aircraft positions inland still smoke from a pre-invasion pounding by bombers and fighters of the 13th AAF. The veteran "Jungle Air Force" not only conducted the first strategic raids on Balikpapan in 1944--then a 2,600-mile flight-- but softened the base for invasion, covered the Australian assault waves on D-Day, and coordinated with them as they moved inland against the Japs.
