Artillery Hits Okinawa Escarpment
ESCARPMENT GETS DIRECT HIT --- An artillery shell landing on the edge of this 400-foot Jap held escarpment in southern Okinawa sends up a cloud of white smoke. Constant battering by 10th Army guns chipped tons of coral rock and dirt from the cliffs from which Japs fought bitter battles using machine guns and hundreds of grenades rolled over the top into American lines below. This position was in the zone of the 7th Division 700 yards southwest of Tomui.
