During the Early Days of the Invasion
During the early days of the invasion, ships were deliberately sunk to create breakwaters for the protection of shipping facilities at the beach heads. A string of ten ships, scuttled to form an "L", is shown here off an American beachhead in Normandy. A photographer in a 9th Air Force plane en route to France on a bombing mission, made the picture.
