Airmen in North Africa

Record Breaking Airmen - These American Airmen in North Africa are indicating their own versions of the Victory symbol: the number of Axis planes each has shot down. All are gunners of a record-breaking Flying Fortress crew which has accounted for 17 enemy planes, 13 of them destroyed during a single mission. The man indicating a score of 9 is Sgt. Benjamin F. Warner, San Francisco, California, who hung up a record for the largest individual score in one day by getting seven. Left to right, these straight-shooting Americans--all sergeants--are: William M. Campble, Cuba, Ill.; S/Sgt. Leo Robins, 1607-65th Place, Los Angeles, Calif.; S/Sgt. E. R. Worthey, Eldon, Mo.; S/Sgt. Warner, San Francisco, Calif.; Edward Jackson, 103 Dorchester, Boston, Mass.; and Sgt. Carlton McGee, 228 8th St., Laurel, Del. Their heavy bombardment group also holds another record: Greatest number of Axis aircraft destroyed in a single day--35, over Gerbini, Sicily.
