Airfields on island

Four airfields to handle medium bombers, heavy bombers and fighter aircraft were built facing northeast-southwest on this island. Construction was done by the 935th Headquarters EAB Co., 805th, 1873rd, 1892nd, 1902nd, and 1903rd EABS. The first strip to start construction was "A", on May 1, the day of the initial landing. Due to heavy and concentrated air attacks EABS underwent additional hardships plus muddy conditions. Planes used in the defense of Ie Shima and Okinawa flew from these strips.
