Airfields on island
1945-07-16
Four airfields to handle medium bombers, heavy bombers and fighter aircraft were built facing northeast-southwest on this island. Construction done by 935th Hqs. EAB Co., 805th, 1873rd, 1892nd and 1902nd and 1903rd EABS. The first strip to start construction was "A" on May 1, 1945, the day of the initial landing. Due to heavy and concentrated Jap air attacks, EABS underwent additional hardships plus muddy conditions. Planes used in the defense of Ie Shima and Okinawa flew from these strips. Ie Shima has a great abundance of coral, which was used to build the airstrips. Ie Shima, Ryukyu Retto, 16 July 1945.
