Adamba leaves in Shuri City
PURSES AND HATS WOVEN IN SHURI CITY - The objects hanging on the line are not grass skirts, as airmen visiting the southern part of Okinawa first surmised, but Adamba leaves, bleached and stripped down for the age-old weaving of purses and hats, as held by the Okinawan children. These objects were being manufactured in the rear of a native hut on a hill in Shuri City. The straw is hung for days to dry and strengthen in the warm tropical sun.
