96th Division on Okinawa

YANKS BATTER OKINAWA WALL -- Sheer cliffs honeycombed with interlocking caves such as this semicircular escarpment south of Tomui (foreground) barred the path of the "Deadeye" 96th Division in the center of the 10th Army line on Okinawa. The escarpment was finally scaled by the 381st Infantry of the 96th Division in the face of intense enemy fire. The dark mass in the upper right is Hill 167 which was also the scene of bitter fighting.
