376th Bomb Group at Bengasi air base
At an air base near Bengasi, Cirenaica, Libya, Major General Lewis H. Brereton, Commanding General of U.S. Armed Forces in the Middle East, briefs members of the 376th Bomb Group just prior to their taking off for the Axis-shattering raid on the Ploesti, Roumania oil fields and refineries. Flying Consolidated B-24 "Liberators," the Americans laid delayed-action high explosive bombs - and thousands of incendiaries - on the source of more than 35% of Germany's war machine fuel. The Yanks flew in the target, in daylight, at less than 500 feet altitude, after practicing for weeks for the mission.
