2nd Lt. Robert A. Zadnik, Gladstone, Michigan, holds the parachute that saved his life in a manner not intended by the manufacturer. While participating in a B-17 "Flying Fortress" raid on Frankfurt, Germany, the plane was attacked by a German fighter plane and a.50 caliber machine-gun bullet, intended for him, was stopped by his parachute. Ridgewell, England, 30 January 1944.
