1st American Airfield in France

Here is an aerial picture of the first American airfield in France. Constructed in four days by aviation engineers of the IX Engineer Command, the site is near St. Pierre du Mont. It was occupied by the first squadron of fighter planes for a U. S. 9th A.F. Republic P-47 Thunderbolt group on D plus seven and played a major role in the initial airground coordination operations that paved the way for the St. Lo breakthrough. The field has since been abandoned.
